May can be a stressful time of year, full of finals preparation and seniors anxious about their futures. Sometimes, some good music is all you need to relax and let loose, and some of the future albums listed below are sure to do just that.
“Born Under Saturn,” Django Django: May 5
Django Django is known for the electronic rock grooves that led it to land in Rolling Stone Magazine’s 50 Best Albums of 2012 with its debut album, “Django Django” and it continues to build upon the sound that made them so successful. The album was available to stream April 28, but was not released for purchase in the United States until May 5. “Born Under Saturn” will do well on the charts; NME (formally known as New Music Express)—a popular British music outlet—gave the album a 7 out of 10 rating.
“California Nights,” Best Coast: May 5
Californian group Best Coast has found its success after two successful album releases, and there is no doubt it is reaching even higher with the release of “California Nights.” The surf pop band released a single, “California Nights,” in February, along with a smattering of tour dates to accompany the album.
Although there’s not a Denver date yet, don’t fear—Best Coast will eventually head from the coast and into the west. Until then, blast Best Coast’s Beach Boys inspired tunes on “California Nights.”
“Mutilator Defeated At Last,” Thee Oh Sees: May 18
This punk influenced garage rock band has evolved from the OCS to The OhSees and most recently, Thee Oh Sees. Now with 10+ studio albums under its belt, the five-member team is well-known for its crazy shows full of intense energy. “Mutilator Defeated At Last” will reflect Thee Oh Sees’ out-of-control vibes. If you can’t wait until May 18 to hear the new tracks, snag some tickets to Thee Oh Sees show on May 12 at the Gothic Theater (bonus: local bands Rubedo and Dirty Few are also on the bill).
“English Graffiti,” The Vaccines: May 25
The Vaccines, a tried-and-true rock band hailing from the UK, are mixing up their sound with “English Graffiti.” The first single off the album, “Handsome” builds off The Vaccines’ rock basis and launches into a strange sounding pop. Lead singer Justin Young himself claims that he doesn’t what this album to be timeless—he wants it to be so 2015-specific that in a decade people won’t even like the album. Hear the 2015 sound yourself on August 22 in Salida, Colorado when The Vaccines hit the road with Mumford & Sons, Flaming Lips and Alabama Shakes on the Gentleman of the Road tour.
May is a big month for album releases this year and hopefully the new tunes can lead to a chill yet exciting summer. Let us know what you think of the albums by contacting us on Facebook (DU Clarion) or Twitter (@duclarion).
