DU offers an array of clubs and organizations, such as Students for Sustainability, that continue to make DU the campus a much cleaner and affable place. Anyone can join these groups to help that can help keep the environment friendly. Being environmentally friendly doesn’t mean trying to clean the entire world, but instead means to try to be better global citizens by changing their daily regimens. There are multiple ways to accomplish this.
Recycle and Compost
DU students can be more environmentally friendly by recycling and throwing out their trash in the correct places. There are designations all around campus for trash so that students do not have to throw it into the streets.
The dining halls, campus buildings and Driscoll Bridge contain compost and recyclables that are visible to the eye. Students should throw out leftover food into the compost and the rest into trash or recycle.
Students should also recycle old phones and batteries in bins allocated for the job which are located in residence halls.
Change your travel
Since DU is such a compact campus, cars and mopeds are not necessary for travel. Most students ride bikes or skateboards to get from one destination to another (in some cases, scooters are coming back and being used more frequently. Riding a bike or skateboard is more efficient and easier on the environment than a car or moped from Centennial Towers to Olin.
Clean up properly
Some students own small pets like dogs. While it is nice to walk one’s pet around, these animals can leave a mess. There are posts that hold trash bags for removal of excrements. Rather than leaving it on the grass or sidewalk for a person to step on it, it should be cleaned up and properly taken care of.
Print right
Students can reduce the amount of printing, thus saving ink and paper. We print a lot of paper for class or entertainment that can go unused.
Don’t be wasteful
Water is a necessity, but not in over-abundance. Students should not use more water than necessary when they shower or leave the faucet on whey they brush their teeth.
Conserving electricity is also important. Turn off all unused lights and chargers, especially when the room is vacant. Students tend to leave the light on 24/7, which is a detriment. If need be, buy a lamp that is smaller than the one in the dorm and uses an LED lightbulb.
Smart spending
Buying used rather than new textbooks is a great call. This essentially recycles the book throughout the community, since students would use it once. This saves the amount of paper printed and trees that would otherwise be cut down.
These are just a few ways DU students can be environmentally friendly. By conserving electricity and water; recycling trash, paper and technology; and reusing textbooks, students can be paragons for others to follow their environmentally friendly ways.
