In the fourth and final episode of Denver’s “Chatting With Chopp,” Chancellor Rebecca Chopp answered even more questions to help introduce her to the Pioneer community.

An international administrations student was curious to discover if there are any particular challenges in becoming the University of Denver’s first woman chancellor.

“I am very proud to be the first woman chancellor, it was very meaningful at the events around the announcement how many women came up to me, and men too, and commented on how proud they were about that,” said Chopp. “I have to say that I have been very fortunate; I’ve had very good experiences. I’ve had some challenges, but I’ve been fortunate. People have been very gracious to me, I have always had people go out of their way to support me.”

Chopp went on to say that being the first female chancellor comes with some unique responsibilities.

“Being the first woman chancellor means that I, working with others, have a special obligation to make sure that other women have opportunities to move in their careers where they would like to,” she said. “We want to make sure that the very best people serve this university.”

Jill Duffy, the assistant director of Student Activities, wanted to know what Chancellor Chopp likes about Pioneer traditions and asked which events Chopp is looking forward to attending in the upcoming school year.

“There are two student traditions that are new to me and I can’t wait. One is the Winter Carnival. What fun to have a Winter Carnival. I have never been a part of a university that has a Winter Carnival,” said Chopp. “I understand that there is a May Days tradition, and I think that those are fabulous traditions.”

David Basler, brand and content director for DU’s Division of Marketing and Communications, was the creator of the “Chatting With Chopp” series and explained the purpose behind the videos.

“We felt video would be an ideal medium for us to introduce Chancellor Chopp to the university and local community, as well as an opportunity for her to answer questions relevant to those communities. We want the DU and local communities to get to know Chancellor Chopp as much as possible before she arrives on campus for the fall quarter,” Basler said.

Basler also said he hopes to produce more of the videos over the upcoming year.

“Our goal is to continue doing these videos throughout the year as we collect more and more questions from various demographics of our on-and off-campus community,” he said.

Basler further commented on the continuous goal of the videos and the purpose he hopes they will provide fellow Pioneers.

“I think we wanted to create a video series that would allow our community to get to know her in a casual way before she arrives on campus,” said Basler. “She wants to foster an environment of transparency, consultation and openness.”
