The Department of Campus Safety (DCS) issued a crime alert notice last Wednesday, April 2, alerting students and university staff that a man had been selling counterfeit Armani suits out of a car near DU.
According to Sergeant Stephen Banet, DCS received tips about the man from two students, but he believes more students have been victims of the counterfeit sales.
“The first victim who contacted us said he talked to people and heard of it happening to other students,” Banet said.
According to the crime alert, students were stopped while walking down the street and asked to purchase the suits, but when they returned home, they found the suits to be of very low quality.
The suspect has been using the name Gallo Al Dorsi and is described as a white man in his late 30’s or early 40’s with dark brown hair. Students have reported that he has told them he is from Italy and speaks with an accent. The car he has been seen driving is a dark gray Range Rover with California license plate 6YWV822.
According to Banet, there has been no involvement from police on the issue because the man’s actions are not a crime.
“This (the crime alert) was more of just a warning,” said Banet. “It’s not actually a crime, what he’s doing. It’s more of a civil issue than criminal.”
The crime alert included several tips for students to help protect themselves from this and other instances of counterfeit crime: Never buy any item from an individual that is sold from their vehicle, trust your instincts and report any suspicious persons to campus safety immediately.
