The estimated $9 million housing complex between the north side of DU and the light-rail station will be completed by its projected date of March 1, 2014, according to Holly Jackson, community manager of Yale Station Senior Apartments.

The complex will not be open for students looking for off-campus residence, but rather to senior citizens who will have easy access to the RTD light rail, according to Jackson.

“By the time the building is complete, it will be completely leased. There will be nothing vacant. By the time March 1 comes, we will have all 60 units rented and [60 senior citizens] moving in,” said Jackson.
The complex, along with its Yale station counterpart, was an investment made by the Colorado real estate giant Koelbel family and their business, Koelbel & Company. According to Jackson, the family began subsidizing senior citizen housing development after demolishing a 40-year-old gas station where the current Yale site stands today.

“They also owned the land [north of DU]. They very much believe in mass transit and a huge need for senior housing,” said Jackson. “That is why they chose that location to be senior housing and not open to the public.”
