DUET (DU Environmental Team) is organizing DU’s first ever farmer’s market, which will open this Thursday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the Driscoll Green as a part of May Days programming.

Chelsea Warren, the main organizer for the event, says the farmers’ market will feature mainly organic and sustainable food. Some local food will be offered as well, although not much agriculture in Colorado is ready to be sold yet.

Warren says five to six groups are expected to sell items at the event, including student groups such as the DU Vegan and Vegetarian Society and Students for Sustainable Food. Other DU partners are also scheduled to sell food at the event, such as Sodexo, which will be selling food that is local and organic at the event such as soda from Boulder and locally-made hummus.

Warren says the farmers’ market seemed to fit well with May Days as a whole.

“May Days seems to be the embodiment of spring—everything is outdoors—and it seemed to go very well with that idea,” she said.

Warren also says she hopes it will become an event that happens often, especially because it would make something like the Pearl Street Market, which she says is very popular among students, more accessible to DU’s student population. She hopes students will learn something from the event.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to start thinking more sustainably, and to think about where their food is coming from, what they should be eating and what they should be putting in their bodies,” said Warren.
