For students thinking about joining Greek Life, recruitment for both fraternities and sororities begins this Thursday evening and ends on Monday when decisions regarding Greek Life membership are made.

Whether you are serious about joining or just exploring your options, recruitment is a great time to meet new people and try Greek Life out.

As you consider recruitment, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

“Be prepared and come with a positive attitude,” said junior Tanisha Crosby-Attipoe, a cognitive neuroscience major from Highlands Ranch in Delta Zeta.

When going through the week of recruitment, the most important thing is to be comfortable, confident and to simply be yourself.

“Don’t try to make an impression that isn’t really you. Look for a chapter that you could see yourself becoming good friends with,” said sophomore Matt Stolwyk, a business major from St. Louis, Mo from the Lambda Chi Alpha chapter.

Make sure to have fun during recruitment; don’t be afraid to ask questions and interact with members of the fraternities and sororities. They want to get to know you as much as you want to get to know them.

“Be engaging in conversations, it is not only nerve-wracking for you but for the sorority girls as well; we love it when you contribute to the conversation and ask questions,” said Crosby-Attipoe.

For many first years who’ve decided to rush for a fraternity or sorority, there are several factors that influence the decision to “go Greek.” Everything from which sorority your mother was a part of to which fraterity proposes the most social benefits can have huge effects on the recruitment decision process.

Senior marketing major Becca Weig suggests that students make their own decisions rather than following their rush groups. “In doing this, you will find the place you are supposed to be,” Weig said.

Ultimately, it’s important to remember Greek life is not for everyone. Whether you decide to pledge or not, recruitment is the perfect opportunity for first years to explore, expand their horizons, meet new people and make new friends while discovering for themselves if they want to join the brother or sisterhood that fraternities and sororities provide for many students.
