A DU student was riding her bicycle on the sidewalk connected to the northern entrance to the parking lot of Bruegger’s Bagels and Starbucks on University Boulevard yesterday morning when she was hit by a car.

The student, junior Sophie Hoad, 20, was hit a few minutes after 8 a.m. when the car was exiting the parking lot. She broke her femur and underwent surgery last night at Swedish Medical Center.

Hoad was issued a $60 citation by a detective upon her arrival at Swedish for riding on the sidewalk, which is illegal in Denver. She was also scheduled to appear in court on June 7.

The driver, whom witnesses said was in his mid-40s, was not cited.

“Sophie was in an ambulance within 30 minutes of the accident,” said Hoad’s roommate, Elle Mohs. “I think the driver was in such shock that he didn’t say anything to her. He stuck around for about an hour and a half.”

Hoad had been riding her bike along the sidewalk when she was hit. Hoad rolled up on the hood of the car, a Nissan SUV, and had a “relatively graceful” roll off the car, according to Mohs.

Hoad is scheduled to work with a physical therapist today and then stay an additional night in Swedish. She will be released tomorrow.

“Hopefully when she leaves the hospital, she’ll be in crutches – no cast or brace or anything,” Mohs said.
