Pearl Street boasts petite boutiques, delicate sandwiches and hipsters from all over Denver coming to study at places such as Stella’s Coffee House. But as of mid-March, Sexy Pizza is bringing sexy back to the sunny streets.

Owner Kayvan Khalatbari opened the newest location of Sexy Pizza last month; however, diners down in Capitol Hill have been enjoying Sexy Pizza since April of 2008, fulfilling their afternoon cravings and late night munchies for four years.

Sexy Pizza is replacing Pearl Street staple The Crushery, a sandwich shop that opened its doors in 2007, offering hand-crushed bagels and sandwich options. Owner John Davidson sold his shop last month to the Sexy Pizza crew.

Davidson decided to close this neighborhood hot spot in late February, and according to an interview with Denver’s Westword published on February 28, the decision was due to his desire to spend more time with his family and make better use of his experience in fine dining.

Here enters Sexy Pizza, replacing the healthy, sandwich-style dining of The Crushery. This pizza place brings grease, funk and a different vibe to the wholesome Pearl Street.

Sexy Pizza has huge glass-paned garage door thrown open, and old-school paintings on the walls depict rap and musical geniuses of the past in bright stop-light yellows and red, harkening back to the old 90s street art.

Music videos are muted on the televisions and families aimlessly wander inside, brave and intent on trying the new neighborhood pizza place.

While Sexy Pizza may lose some of its sex appeal with the G-rated, family-oriented crowd of Pearl Street, it’s still a great place to get a cheap slice, drink a cheap beer (they do have a liquor license, and offer an assortment of Hipster beer) and enjoy the life of a true college student.

It’s really the prices that make this place so sexy. For a lunch special, it’s $5 for two slices of pizza and a fountain drink.

Somewhat out of tune with the rest of the neighborhood restaurants, Sexy Pizza may have some difficulty attracting the family crowds from the area.

However, DU students willing to venture off the beaten path will find solace in the greasy goodness of New York-style pizza.

Sexy Pizza is known downtown for its free late night deliveries, available until midnight, and particularly for its large 18” 1 topping pizza for $13.99.

Sexy Pizza is located at 1579 S. Pearl Street, down the block from Pajama Baking Company, and is currently hiring.
