So, yes, this may not be a singular review of a television episode this week, but as this column goes on break for the end of the quarter we leave you with another Hulu find. In the spirit of the recent Academy Awards, consider something else to keep you occupied for spring: movies.
Hulu aims to rival Netflix, as with its Hulu Plus program it now offers instant gratification on certain network shows (like Fox’s Glee) with next-day viewing, compared to waiting eight whole days otherwise. No one wants to be a week behind with their favorite show.
In addition, Hulu Plus has the Criterion collection and Miramax films up for viewing with the “plus” subscription, and has lately been adding more as weekly freebies.
Replacing amateur documentaries and B-rated Lifetime movies with entertaining and high-quality films like “Chicago,” “Amelie,” “The Circus” (with Charlie Chaplin), “Groundhog Day” and “Gangs of New York,” Hulu Plus is increasing the prominence of film on the site to supplement its regularly offered television shows.
When you are wondering on a lazy spring-break day whether to marathon the latest season of Teen Mom on MTV.com or to resign yourself to watching a documentary about Star Wars addicts, look instead to catch up on past nominees for Oscars such as “Chicago” and “Doubt,” or slip into a moment of nostalgia with old black and white films like “The Little Rascals” and “The Circus.” Revisit the magic of movies and give television a break for a while.
A Hulu Plus subscription costs $7.99 a month. For more details visit www.hulu.com/plus.
