Colorado’s sweethearts in the indie-folk fivesome Churchill are already climbing in recognition and popularity.  The group has only improved since its first EP and following full-length debut album entitled Happy/Sad. Lively and engaging on the stage, and just as good if not better on its studio recordings, Churchill never fails to impress.

Now, with its latest EP release, we find ourselves in love all over again. Though not wildly different from the sound established on Happy/Sad, the mild doses of country (“Ark in a Flood”) and Florence + the Machine-esque instrumental backings in “Change” give the band’s sound a fresh spin and recaptures the listener’s attention.

“I Am Yours” is reminiscent of the lovesick songs in Happy/Sad, but in the best of ways – continuing the simple romantic lyrics and upbeat tunes are typical of Churchill.

“Made A List” starts with a Black Keys-like guitar riff and continues in that vein as a fun, more rock-style song.

“Sing Out Your Love” surprises the listener, beginning as a mellow, soft-spoken ballad breaks into a heartwarming explosion of sound in the last verse and chorus.

Churchill is proving that it is maturing in development and sound, but is still in the early stages as the group appears to be exploring the sounds typified by other bands ranging from alternative to pop.

While the first EP had its own bluesy folk sound, and the album moved closer to indie-rock, this new EP seems a little confused – or maybe just adventurous. The songs themselves are enjoyable, and the vocals unify the songs and leave the viewer eagerly awaiting the full album, which is hopefully soon to come.

Churchill will play its CD Release concert at the Bluebird Theater on March 9, featuring Popcult and Rachel James.
