A DU student was assaulted Sunday night at the intersection of South University Boulevard and East Asbury Avenue, on the sidewalk near the Conoco gas station.
The freshman student, Stephen, suffered a minor cut on his right leg, roughly three inches in length, after kicking his attacker, who had wielded a knife.
“It doesn’t matter how big of a guy you are or how scrawny you are, never walk back alone by yourself at night,” Stephen said.
The attacker is described as being a white male of medium build and stature with no facial hair and a noticeably large nose, according to a crime report released on Sunday by Campus Safety.
Denver Police are still searching for a suspect.
Stephen was walking alone from his fraternity house to Centennial Halls at 1:30 a.m. on Sunday when he realized someone was walking behind him, Stephen said. Turning around, he noticed a man wearing a black hoodie and dark jeans. When Stephen reached the sidewalk near the Conoco gas station, at the intersection of South University Boulevard and East Asbury Avenue, the man approached him.
Initially the man asked for directions to the Border Bar, which is located just on the other side of University Boulevard, Stephen said. He then demanded that Stephen give him his wallet, which did not contain any cash at the time.
“I was really taken by surprise and told the guy I didn’t have anything on me. When I refused, he punched me in the lip,” said Stephen. “He took another swing, which I blocked. Then I punched him twice, once in the jaw and once in the chest, and kicked him in the abdomen.”
After the exchange, which didn’t last more than a minute, according to Stephen, the man “stood and looked at me for a second, like he was thinking about it, then he ran down that alley behind the Conoco towards Ritchie.”
Once the attacker ran away, Stephen continued walking to his dorm, where he discovered that he had a split lip and a large cut on his leg, at which point he called Campus Safety.
“I never really saw the knife,” Stephen said. “It happened so quickly, and there was a lot of adrenaline going, that I really just wanted to go back to my room and sleep.”
Stephen said that he must have gotten the cut when he kicked the attacker in the abdomen. He discovered the injury once back in his dorm room.
