Freshman hockey players honored by WCHA

Pioneer freshmen Joey LaLeggia and Ty Loney were named Red Baron Western Collegiate Hockey Association Defensive Player and co-Rookie of the Week, respectively, for the week of Jan. 17.

This is LaLeggia’s first WCHA honor and comes after Denver’s sweep of Bemidji State on Jan. 13-14. LaLeggia recorded five points on one goal and four assists during the series and leads all NCAA Division I rookie defensemen with 24 points (nine goals, 15 assists). He has recorded 11 points (three goals, eight assists) during his current six-game point streak.

This award also serves as Loney’s first weekly honor from the WCHA. Loney, a forward for the Pioneers, is tied for 10th in WCHA rookie overall scoring with 13 points (five goals, eight assists). Loney recorded a career-high two goals Jan. 13 and added a game-winning assist Jan. 14 against Bemidji State. Loney is riding a five-game point streak during which he has nine points on four goals and five assists.

Lysdahl races to RMISA Skier of the Week

Denver freshman Espen Lysdahl was named the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Skiing Association’s first alpine Skier of the Week for the 2012 season on Jan. 17.

Lysdahl received this award after racing to a 3rd-place finish in his first collegiate giant slalom race at the University of Colorado Spencer J. Nelson Memorial Invitational on Jan. 7 in Eldora, Colo.

“The conditions were terrible; it was just one big fight,” said Lysdahl. “I appreciate the honor. It is important for me and my confidence, but I really want to be on top of that podium.”

The RMISA determines the skier of the week awards by adding together the placements of each skier’s two respective finishes in the slalom and giant slalom. At the CU Invitational, Lysdahl also recorded an 8th-place finish in the slalom.

At the Denver Invitational Jan. 14 and 15, Lysdahl finished 4th in the slalom and 5th in the giant slalom.
