Two DU student organizations, the ISMS Art Club and the DU Medical Brigade, received funding changes from USG this year.
ISMS Art Club funding increased by $600 this year, giving them a total of $2,000 for the 2011-2012 school year.
This comes after the club’s funding had been reduced from $2,000 for the 2009-2010 school year to $1,400 for the 2010-2011 school year.
“As is typical with the Art Club, their funding changed based on whether or not the club funds Senior Art Projects and puts on a show,” director of campus activities Carl Johnson said.
The DU Medical Brigade, a new club on campus, requested $1,750 to fund their activities but received $450.
“No history to accurately assess what they have done, [the] Finance Committee cannot grant full allocation requests,” said J.P. Griego, sophomore senator and chair of the Finance Committee – adding that more funding could be requisitioned by applying for it through co-programming events and other bodies.
Griego said USG is committed to helping student organizations become licensed so they can be deemed fundable.
“[Clubs] present a list of things to spend money on,” said first-year senator Lena Chhay of the funding process, adding that the discretion of USG is then applied to ensure that the money is “sufficient enough for what they’re planning to do.”
Chhay votes on the proposed funding issues but does not serve on the Finance Committee, which creates all appropriation bills.
The funding process is used to ensure organizations adhere to their missions and rules. It is applied by the USG members and committees to each club that seeks funding.
“Once approved by the Senate, the Finance Committee analyzes the student [organizations’] finance application,” Griego said.
Then, the entire Senate decides how much to give the group for a budget.
