A student was discovered to have suspectedly ingested an unidentified amount of sleeping pills and was found going in and out of consciousness outside of Olin Hall around 1:30 p.m. yesterday. The student, whose name and class year was not released, was taken to Porter Hospital upon paramedics’ arrival.
“There was possibly an indeterminant amount of pills taken,” said Tyrone Mills, associate director of Campus Safety. “The hospital will determine if he had taken pills and what type of pills, if any, were taken.”
The student reportedly locked himself in a car, a silver BMW, on Iliff Street outside of Olin Hall near Parking Lot O.
“We received a call from a friend of the victim who stated that he was concerned about his friend being suicidal,” said Mills. “We observed the individual was going in and out of consciousness, so we contacted paramedics.”
The student was laying in the passenger seat of the vehicle
when a Campus Safety officer was dispatched. The officer attempted to keep the student awake.
The student complained of being extremely tired, but the officer continued to tell him to stay conscious.
The ambulance arrived at about 1:30 p.m. and paramedics transported the student to Porter Hospital.
Mills said Campus Safety will investigate the situation and wait to hear from Porter Hospital staff for further recommendations.
“If it was a suicide attempt, we will work directly with recommendations of Student Health Services and go from there,” Mills said.
DU’s Health and Counseling Center offers therapy services to students. According to Jacaranda Palmateer, director of counseling services, when the center hears about a suicide attempt, they attempt to make contact to help the student.
“It really depends on the situation,” said Palmateer. “We do what is in the best interest of the student.”
