A new neighborhood sports bar featuring barbecue and unique food is scheduled to open Friday, Nov. 11, at the corner of Downing and Evans.

Boone’s, named after DU’s unofficial student mascot, will feature a “scratch kitchen,” where most of the ingredients will be made from scratch rather than store-bought.

It is the newest location by B.U.F.F. Brothers’ Rob Lanphier and Tim Gibson, the owners of Boone’s. Lanphier said the bar comes after B.U.F.F. Brothers closed five of their locations last year, including the College Inn in Denver and Pifler’s Sports Bar and Grill in Lakewood, Colo.

B.U.F.F stands for “Big Ugly Fat Fellas,” an acronym the owners came up with when the company started in 1998.

According to Lanphier, they decided to open the new hot-spot near the DU campus to make it a neighborhood sports tavern.

“It’ll be a place where anyone of any age can come to have a good time,” said Lanphier. “We want to expand to everyone in the neighborhood rather than just DU students, although the students are definitely a plus.”

Boone’s will offer a wide range of beer, and it will only be open to those over the age of 21 after 7 p.m. The kitchen will remain open until 1 a.m. daily.

“Students under the age of 21 will be able to come in and get [take-out food] whenever they like,” said Lanphier. “They just can’t hang out in the bar.”

Boone’s also plans on having specials around finals to cater to DU students.

The menu will include common sports bar items such as burgers, quesadillas and onion rings in addition to barbeque, unique to this location.

B.U.F.F. Brothers’ restaurants still in operation include Noonan’s Tavern in Aurora, Colo., Ralphie’s in Lousiville, Colo. and FuNuGyz in Parker, Colo.

“I’d like to think that it’s better than typical,” said Lanphier, adding that B.U.F.F Brothers pride themselves in serving the highest quality food for sports bars.

Its first restaurant was the College Inn.

The company has grown to nine locations, including one in Arizona.

Boone’s is also looking for students to hire. The restaurant’s manager will begin interviewing interested students around Tuesday, Oct. 11.
