The DU men’s soccer team went 1-1 as they defeated Calif. Poly on  3-1 Sunday, but lost to Calif. State Fullerton 4-2 on Friday.

Against Fullerton, DU trailed 2-0 at the half, but came back and scored one goal before giving up two within 54 seconds.

“They got us early; we had a couple of missed clearances and they finished it well,” Head coach Bobby Muuss said. “Being on the road, you question yourself a little when you give a goal in the first minute.”

Despite the loss, there were some bright spots in Friday’s game.

“I like the adjustments that we made as a group and the way we got a goal right after. We had some chances when it was 2-1 to make it 2-2. We definitely battled but Friday was not a good day,” Muuss said.

The Pioneers implemented a slightly different gameplan for Sunday according to Muuss.

“Cal poly is a very good team, and they have a very narrow field.  So, we changed out five guys in the line up with an older group,” said Muuss.  “We put a little more fight into the game and played a little more direct.”

The Pioneers tallied early as they took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute.

“We scored first this time, which changed the game. I think the guys had a lot more confidence. It was definitely a fight, though,” said Muuss.

Beckie then scored his third goal of the weekend after an assist from Blake Shannon, giving DU a 2-0.

Calif. Poly’s only goal came on a free kick from right outside the box that beat Pioneer goalie  Maté Aguirre, putting the score at 2-1.

The Pioneer’s final tally came at the 72nd minute of the match as Matt Kirby regained a two-goal lead for DU.

The Pioneers will face Air Force on Oct. 1 at 7:00 p.m at Ciber Field.
