Unknown Component, the solo project of Keith Lynch, is a prime example of self-sufficiency. Lynch writes the songs, plays every instrument, draws the album art and mixes and produces the albums.

He also is completely self-taught, saying that he started playing music when he found an acoustic guitar in his attic. Later, Lynch taught himself bass, piano and drums.

Lynch also manages his band, sets up his shows and promotes his albums.

Lynch said Facebook drives his promotion efforts, although he also appears at college radio shows and gives interviews to produce media coverage.

When asked about how he managed his time between working as Unknown Component and living life, Lynch responded, “I don’t have much of a life.” However, Lynch said that it had not yet reached the point where he felt he had to get some sort of assistance to get all the work done.

He also explained that this lack of time is even worse when he is making an album, often staying up until 3 a.m., “because that’s when I write best for some reason.”

When asked about what made him want to take on a solo project, Lynch said that it was partly due to other projects not working out, as well as wanting to be “100 percent responsible” for the music he was creating.

Unknown Component’s new album, The Infinite Definitive, is definitely the better for the amount of time, care and love Lynch has put into that 100 percent responsibility.

This being Unknown Component’s eighth studio album, it is infinitely clear that Lynch knows the instruments he plays well.

The lyrics themselves are well- written, and the songs are perfect examples of good alt-rock. This would be an impressive album if an entire band had produced it, and that is only compounded by the fact that it is produced by only one person.

Unknown Component is a prime example of the indie music scene in this day and age, and its newest album The Infinite Definitive is an alt-rock triumph.

Fans of either indie music or alternative rock should do themselves a favor and get their hands on a copy.
