BTo celebrate Lil Wayne’s 28th birthday on Sept. 27, what was originally planned as an EP was changed to his eighth studio album, I Am Not a Human Being, released digitally. Yes, Lil Wayne will be in prison until Nov. 4, but that does not stop him from cooking up new music.
The first single, “Right Above It,” features Drake and was No.1 on the Billboard Hot Digital Songs chart, becoming the first Lil Wayne song to top this chart.
The beat is great , and it has an inspired feel, making it the highlight of the album. The next single, “I’m Single” also features Drake, but for some reason it was not included on the actual album release.
The intro to the album, called “Gonorrhea,” has a strong beat, but the lyrics are almost too much – for obvious reasons, and it also features Drake.
Next is “Hold Up,” with T-Streets, who has a weaker verse, but Drake makes up for it in the next song “With You,” with the “ooo ooo ooo’s” in the background and Drake singing in his Thank Me Later R&B style. The namesake song of the album, “I Am Not A Human Being” has a rock beat with heavy drums, making it seem like it belongs on his unsuccessful rock album Rebirth.
“What’s Wrong With Them” will have Nicki Minaj fans satisfied with the chorus. “Popular” features Young Money’s Lil Twist, who normally does a good job but struggled on this track . “That Ain’t Me” features Jay Sean, and “Bill Gates” is a solid ending to the album.
This would have made a decent mixtape, but there is no reason why this should have been made as an album other than it is Lil Wayne’s birthday, and he is in jail.
Another thing one will notice is that many hip-hop artists will make mixtapes using one style, and once a studio album rolls around they make the album more for the female audience: like Drake’s Thank Me Later for example, and there is evidence of that here.
However, the album will hit the actual record stores on Oct. 12 with three extra songs that could make the album worth buying.
