A Peace Pole, donated by the Class of 2010, will be unveiled today, the International Day of Peace.
The unveiling will be at 5 p.m. by the Evans Chapel.
A poll of seniors taken last year had shown that the graduating class wanted to give the university a gift indicative and representative of the Class of 2010’s legacy.
The Peace Pole is a 10-foot tall, seven-sided monument which bears the inscription “May peace prevail on Earth.”
If cost $1,350 and was funded through donations made by seniors, family members and friends.
The message is written in all of the languages taught at DU, with the exception of Russian.
The gift was sculpted by Joel Selmeier in Ohio. Selmeier has been creating peace poles and other artwork promoting peace since 1999.
The pole was designed to mimic DU’s architecture.
The pole is a “strong representation of the values of DU,” according to former student body president Antoine Perretta.
“The pole itself conveys our values and represents much of what members of the Class of 2010 worked to achieve during their undergraduate years at DU,” said Lalu Abebe, former senior senator on the Undergraduate Student Government. “It helps propagate the university’s message of inclusive excellence.”
The concept of peace poles was developed by Masahisa Goi, who dedicated her life to advocating peace after witnessing the atom bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima during World War II.
Since 1955, hundreds of thousands of peace poles have been erected in many countries.
