Last week the USG senate voted down Resolution 6B (4 to 12), which called for DU to work with Sodexo management to solve their employment issues immediately. The vote came after a healthy and productive debate which addressed whether the USG Senate should tackle labor relations issues involving non-university employees.
Sodexo employees work for Sodexo, not DU. The majority of senators felt that they represent students, and should not meddle in non-student matters. It is important to note, however, that the senators are sympathetic to the cause and support Sodexo employees as they strive for better working conditions.
As we address issues that involve student well-being, sometimes a number of other issues arise that involve more than just the students.
When we were elected, we took an oath of office that we would act in the best interests of the students. We were not elected by Sodexo employees. Individual students and individual student organizations that choose to become advocates do so on their own initiative.
If individual students choose to champion labor relations, especially those of non-DU employees, it will not be heralded through the USG.
Some of you may question my sensitivity and think I am not sympathetic to the cause.
As a student of HRTM, labor relations is one of the crucial components to operating a successful enterprise. I do believe that Sodexo employees should be recognized and be able to voice their concerns.
If employees have concerns, there are channels in place within the Sodexo corporation to allow for those concerns to be addressed.
I hope that Sodexo will be able to find a solution to the grievances that the employees have put forth. I hope for that not as the USG president, but as an individual who cares for the well-being of others.
Now, as we enter the month of February, I encourage you to attend some events that are being hosted by the Black Student Alliance as part of Black History Month.
Vice President Jim Francescon and President Pro-Tempore Javi Ogaz and I all enjoyed the event last Thursday evening and all of the very talented individuals who participated in Open Mic Night. There is another opportunity to get involved this Friday evening in the Driscoll Ballroom.
