The student group Pioneers for Public Health is working to engage students interested in healthcare and public service in community projects.
The organization is holding an informational meeting today at 6 p.m. in the Nelson Hall private dining room.
The group was operating last quarter with a focus on preventative vision care, through the network of Unite for Sight International. The members reorganized the DU group and are now working more broadly for general preventative healthcare, said president Allie Moore.
Pioneers for Public Health works mainly with non-profits in the Denver area, helping lower-income and homeless people access resources for free healthcare services, she said.
Last quarter, the group helped with vision screenings at a Denver homeless shelter and held a fundraiser at Jamba Juice for international corrective vision surgery funding.
Next quarter they plan to be involved in Project Homeless Connect. They also plan to compile a list of resources for free healthcare to distribute at homeless shelters in Denver, said Moore.
The group hopes to attract members with concern for public health and service, she said.
“We really want students who have specific healthcare and service interests to have the resources available to fulfill them,” said Moore.
The group has about ten regular members, she said, and meets regularly on Sundays at 6 p.m. in the Nelson private dining room.
