It’s that time of year again. An opportunity for my gender to blame a holiday for their inappropriate outfits.

There is a great quote from “Mean Girls”: “Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.”

Well, here is a girl who’s going to say something about it.

This year, Halloween falls on DU’s Homecoming weekend. I’m sure DU hopes to discourage students from the usual mayhem they engage in on Halloween night. I doubt it will work to any serious extent.

However, I hope it does remind girls that their parents are not too far away, and that maybe the lingerie  they were going to try to pass for appropriate clothing may not have been the best choice. Colorado weather alone should be enough for ladies to want to cover up more. But I know that it’s not.

Men are able to be witty, funny or scary. The girls’ section of costume stores offer a generic selection of characters straight out of a low-budget porn movie.

I know that there are girls who attempt to break that stereotype because I will not be a French maid, girl scout or bunny.

Well, actually I am going to be a bunny. But my costume consists of a sweatshirt turned inside out and some pants. Not exactly what I’d call a “come and get it” look.

I’ve had friends dress up creatively and covered up, but I have to say that costume stores do not help our gender out too much. Some of the dog costumes are made of even more fabric.

My friend Eddie was showing me some funny costume options for his dog, Roxy, and I couldn’t help but compare them to some of the skimpy outfits I’d seen at the costume shops. This year, Roxy will look classier than most of the girls around campus, since apparently Halloween is a free pass for girls to look like sluts.
