“Girl Code,” which premiered last Tuesday on MTV, is a good laugh for girls and young women alike. All episodes are centered around discussion topics pertaining to women, with comedians and actors adding input from their personal experiences. The premiere focuses on breasts, crushes, drinking and roommates, with amusing banter and quips following the discussions. Additionally, small sections are added, such as “Long Story Short” and “Is That Weird?”

“Girl Code,” a feminized spin-off of the acclaimed “Guy Code” on MTV, is going to be broadcast on Tuesday evenings. Typically women create the bulk of the commentary, but occasionally men weigh in with their opinions. In addition to telling jokes on the subject of the episode, the women try to disclose some wisdom for the viewers, such as advice on how not to be “that girl,” the term used to describe a girl who has had too much to drink. One comedian, Jessimae Peluso, reminded girls to always have self-control when drinking and to remember that your opinions can be a bit skewed when intoxicated.

So far, while being only one episode in, the show looks like it will be another one of MTV’s hits. Granted, “Girl Code” is less about plot and substance and more about crude, truthful hilarity. The first season will hopefully maintain originality, but if the producers plan for a second season, they will probably tread into overused territory. As diverse and complex as people are, there wouldn’t be as many compelling and interesting discussions to feature that hadn’t been shown in season one.

The most positive aspect of the show is that the women who are featured on it are willing to say what they think, no matter what society will say. One example of this is the fact that these women had the self-esteem to discuss their own breasts on national television. While continuing with funny stories and lines throughout the episode, they were willing to joke about themselves and their pasts. The additional commentary and advice are a major advantage to the show, and make it more than just a comedic endeavor.

Many comedians grace the TV screen on “Girl Code,” yet most of them are new to the industry. Several fresh-to-TV comedians include Jessimae Peluso, Carly Aquilino and Alice Wetterlund, while a few of the others have held small parts in TV and movies. For their limited experience, they are very natural in front of the camera,  and their hilarity is easily apparent to viewers. Some of the more experienced members of the cast of “Girl Code” are Nicole Byer (“30 Rock”), Jamie Lee (“Conan”), Esther Ku (“The Cookout 2”), and Jeff Dye (“Numbnuts”).

In general, girls will definitely enjoy the show more than guys, but some things could stand to be learned by the male gender through “Girl Code.” An example would be how men can correctly treat women or give an understanding of what females sometimes have to go through biologically. Viewers will be sure to return to the show in the following weeks, especially because the episodes are one-shots, so missing an episode will not decrease one’s understanding of the show.

Upcoming in new episodes of “Girl Code” are several other topics that are not usually discussed on television. From visiting the gynecologist to periods to one-night stands, the women of “Girl Code” will be sure to exude good advice and provide viewers with a good laugh as the season continues.
