On April 28 at about 9:30 a.m., Amy King, Vice Chancellor of Human Resources, announced Jean McAllister as DU’s new full-time Title IX coordinator. The University has been searching for a Title IX coordinator since the announcement of the new position in the fall of 2014.

According to the DU Title IX website, “Title IX is a law that came into play more than 40 years ago that is applicable to all higher education institutions receiving federal financial assistance. It prohibits discrimination based on sex (gender).”

McAllister starts working in June, and will hold many responsibilities, according to King’s announcement.

“Jean will report to Kathryne Grove, EEO (Office of Equal Opportunity) director, and will begin her work at DU effective June 1,” noted the announcement. “Jean will play a key role in our efforts to build and sustain a safe, gender-equitable campus climate for all members of the University community. Her work will be supported within the Title IX division by two internal investigators, Eric Butler and a soon-to-be-named second investigator.”

DU plans to offer better assistance to anyone dealing with issues such as sexual discrimination, sexual assault and relationship violence.

“The University of Denver is committed to providing an environment free of discrimination on the basis of sex (gender), including sexual misconduct, sexual assault, relationship (dating and domestic) violence and stalking,” states the DU Title IX website. “The University provides resources and reporting options to students, faculty and staff to address concerns related to sexual harassment and sexual violence prohibited by Title IX and University policy.”

According the announcement from King, McAllister has over 30 years of experience addressing trauma and interpersonal violence.

“Jean’s extensive experience in working across multiple statewide coalitions, law enforcement agencies, educational institutions and direct service agencies, combined with her deep insight into effective awareness and training strategies and her understanding of individual and community needs in dealing with trauma, make her an excellent choice as the University’s Title IX coordinator,” noted the announcement.
