The DU men’s tennis team lost to the University of New Mexico on April 21 but rebounded with their fourth Summit League victory of the season in a win over University of Nebraska Omaha on April 22. Denver improved to 10-12 overall on the season, including 4-0 in their conference.

Surrendering the doubles point, DU fell down 1-0 early versus the Lobos. Seniors Alex Gasson (Alton, United Kingdom) and Yannik James (St. Georges, Grenada) nearly helped the Pioneers take the 2-1 advantage in doubles, but they dropped their match 7-6.

Sophomore Ignatius Castelino (Superior, Colorado) earned his second career singles competition win, the only point Denver earned in the 4-1 loss. He downed his opponent 7-5, 6-4.

For the fourth year in a row, DU improved to 4-0 in Summit League play with their win over Omaha. Before play began, seniors Gasson, James and Diogo Rocha (Lisbon, Portugal) were recognized for their contributions to the Pioneers over the past four years.

Once play began, Denver asserted themselves as the class of the Summit League. Earning the doubles point was the combination of Gasson and James, as well as junior Wyatt Lovera (Miami, Florida) and freshman Pedro Fernandez Del Valle (Newport Beach, California).

Denver swept the singles competitions, which included victories by Gasson, James and Rocha in their final Summit League regular season matches.

Rocha, the final player to finish, was also the only individual to win in three sets. He was victorious, coming back 4-6, 6-4 and 1-0.

Earning straight sets singles wins, Castelino turned in another sparkling outing for DU. His performance over the week earned him Summit League Player of the Week honors.

DU will travel to Indianapolis for the Summit League Championships on April 28-29.
