Having worked at a Creole restaurant for many years, my palate for Cajun food is fairly experienced.  When I was asked to write a review on Lucile’s, I was very excited.

Lucile’s Creole Cafe sits on a quaint street corner, and its tiny parking lot always seems packed, which was a promising sign.  Upon entering the building, I immediately noticed all the string and brass instruments hanging on the brick wall—highly reminiscent of a New Orleans atmosphere.  The restaurant was open and had a charming ambience; the service was very speedy and the staff provided decent service.

Of course, when you go out to eat, it’s all about the food, and I must say that I didn’t think Lucile’s lived up to the hype.  Many of my friends told me that it was going to be great, but I didn’t necessarily think that was the case.

I ordered some beignets to start, followed by the Eggs Eisenhower (eggs any style, potatoes and/or grits, a buttermilk biscuit and additional choice of protein like sausage, ham or bacon).  The biscuit came out first, and it was huge, which is great because I’m all about bang for your buck, but I had to specially order a side of gravy that tasted okay.  I get that they were trying to spice it up with Cajun seasoning, but the gravy just tasted…funky.

Once the remainder of my meal arrived, I was slightly disappointed.  The bacon was dry and tasteless, the cheese on my scrambled eggs looked like plastic and the potatoes were far too overdone on the spice scale.  On top of all that, the ketchup was homemade—I appreciate the effort—but sometimes good old, classic Heinz will do.

I think that the food at Lucile’s could be very good and be worth all the positive comments on its Yelp page, but I was less than impressed with my meal at this restaurant.  It didn’t help that I was slapped with a $25 check at the end for food that was hardly worth it.

Lucile’s Creole Cafe tries to make up for average food at high prices with a pleasant ambience and quick service, but I’m not sure that I will dine at their restaurant again.

Overall, I’d give Lucile’s Creole Cafe a 3 out of 5 stars.
