The DU men’s and women’s tennis teams have found early success in their 2016 seasons, both participating in various tournaments throughout the fall portion of their schedule.

The men’s team recently participated in the ITA Mountain Regional in Las Vegas, held from Oct. 19-23. Seniors Alex Gasson (Alton, United Kingdom) and Yannik James (St. Georges, Grenada) combined to win the Doubles Championship against Boise State University. They won the match 6-2, 6-2.

By emerging victorious, the pair will now be eligible to play in the ITA Indoor National Championship Tournament to be held Nov. 3-6. Gasson and James are ranked No. 46 nationally.

Senior Diogo Rocha (Lisbon, Portugal) was seeded No. 1 in the 32-person men’s open singles tournament. However, he was upset in only the second round after receiving a bye in the first.

At the ITA Regional Championship held in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Oct. 12-16, the women’s team finished with a 20-12 record.

Sophomores Bianca Mok (Boise, Idaho) and Arisha Ladhani (West Vancouver, British Columbia) both finished 3-1 in singles play.

Senior Maureen Slattery (Newport News, Virginia) also went 3-1 in singles play, having also received a bye. She knocked out another DU tennis player in round four before losing herself in round five.

The women’s team’s next appearance will be at the Notre Dame Invitational, held in South Bend, Illinois on Nov. 4-6.
