DU offers a diverse and broad variety of classes each quarter, which is one of the university’s most appealing aspects. Students in a variety of majors have specific classes they need to take, but all students have a wide selection of other fascinating classes to fill their elective requirements, or just to learn something new.  Another benefit of being a Pioneer is that you have the opportunity to partake in interterm classes. There is no end to the possibilities during your interterm course, as you can travel to foreign countries or explore local gems during the six week winter break.

This winter break, there are many interterm courses being offered, and they can all be found on the DU interterm website.  Many of these unique classes take place in beautiful countries like Belize, Brazil, South Africa and places in the Caribbean, just to name a few.  Interterm courses are four credits and the dates for each international trip vary. However, if you are looking for more domestic options, there are also interterm classes offered in and around Colorado, including a stress management course being offered in Aspen.  Unfortunately the deadline for winter interterm has passed, although if classes aren’t completely full registration may still be available. However, there is plenty of time to plan for spring interterm and beyond. Currently, there are only a few courses listed under the spring and summer interterm sections.  These include the same stress management classes in Aspen, as well as other classes in the United States and some international courses.  As more classes are confirmed, they will be added to the list on DU’s interterm website.  Registration becomes available on Jan. 1, 2017.

Logistically, there are many other aspects to consider if you want to register for an interterm class.  The tuition for each of these classes is separate from the regular quarters and thus are billed to your account separately. While it is a different tuition payment for all interterm courses in the winter, spring and summer, the cost is $1,258 per credit hour—the same as all courses offered throughout the 2016-17 academic year.  Flights and additional expenses are each individual’s responsibility because DU doesn’t offer aid for those portions of the course.

It’s understandable that this expense might be too much for some students to afford, but luckily, there is financial aid available.  This should be your first step after doing research on which class and location you’d like to travel to.  To apply for financial aid for the interterm courses, visit the DU interterm financial aid page.  There is both need-based and merit-based aid to be given, and in order to be eligible, students must have submitted both a CSS Profile and FAFSA.  After applying, and hopefully obtaining aid, the next step is to apply and register for your interterm adventure.

Happy travels, Pio
