Donald Trump has recently called on his supporters to monitor polling places in order to be vigilant about voter fraud and a “rigged” outcome. In response, President Obama has claimed that a voter is more likely to get struck by lightning than have the person next to them commit voter fraud. However, Trump continues to make comments about how this year’s presidential election is rigged. I agree with Trump that the election is rigged, but not in the way he believes. Here are three ways that I feel display that the election is actually rigged:

1. Photo ID laws

Around 11 percent of those living in the U.S. do not have government-issued photo I.D., such as a driver’s license or passport, yet a person is required to have one to vote in 12 states. These laws are supposed to be put into place in order to prevent voter fraud, but they disproportionately affect the elderly, black Americans, Latinos and low-income residents. Some have compared the law to the poll tax that Southern states once used to stop black people from voting.

2. Felony disenfranchisement

Felony disenfranchisement refers to the laws that keep those previously convicted of committing a crime from voting. About 6.1 million Americans cannot vote because of a felony conviction. These laws target people of color, especially those who are black. While 1 in 56 non-black Americans are affected by these laws, 1 in 13 black Americans have lost their voting rights.

3. Gerrymandering

In his most recent State of the Union speech, President Obama called on the U.S. to end partisan gerrymandering. This is the act of drawing districts to give either the Democrat or Republican party an advantage of getting seats in the U.S. Congress. Gerrymandering has also impacted those of different races and classes, taking away political power from people of color and those of lower income.

While Trump continues to complain about how the election is rigged against him, there are real people who are prevented from participating in the election due to laws that make it harder for minority and low-income citizens to vote. The election is indeed rigged. It is rigged against those who cannot access the voting polls this year and will be unable to make their voice heard.
