It’s finally spring break— at least for some of us. Whether you’re taking a lavish party vacation, flying home or just having a Treat-Yo’-Self week, you’re sure to be listening to music and The Knocks’ new album “55” should definitely be on your playlist.

From New York City, this electronic duo has been making music since 2010 and as of March 4, they have finally released their first album, “55.” It’s a high energy and funky record that is sure to add to whatever your break has to offer.

Starting out strong, the album begins with “New York City” which features rapper Cam’Ron. Between the piano ballad, gospel-like belts of “New York” and the slow build, this is a powerful start to “55.” What makes this song even more striking is its lyrics. Cam’Ron raps about social injustice, the Twin Towers falling and the melting pot that is New York City. In the first verse he raps “New York City/Welcome to Medina, the Mecca, the melting pot/Where you could be playin’ ball or sellin’ rocks/Tell the cops, they don’t care/If you starvin’, they won’t share.” It’s a beautiful song and has a lot of emotion behind it.

The best way to describes The Knocks’ signature sound is somewhere in between Disclosure and Daft Punk. They have a new, fresh sound but it’s rooted with funky bass lines and throwback melodies. One example is “Collect My Love” featuring Alex Newell, a previous cast member on Glee who also just released his first EP. The song’s lyrics are a bit elementary, but the tune is infectious and will definitely make you dance. Newell is a member of the LGBT community and performs as both a man and a woman, which can be seen in the video for “Collect My Love,” which is pretty much just a big drag queen party.

Most of the songs are danceable on “55,” but it’s “The Key” that is their perfect dance tune. It has euphoric synths layered over a funky beat and a bassy chorus, which makes it great for the dance floor. There’s also “Kiss The Sky” featuring Wyclef Jean that has similar qualities, but with Jean robotically rhyming and belting his heart out. Both songs are sure to make any Spring Break party playlist a hit.

Where The Knocks’ really show their strengths is with their collaboration with Carly Rae Jepsen, “Love Me Like That.” Jepsen’s sweet, soft voice fits perfectly into this 80s styled ballad. The harmonies are angelic, the bass is driving and every sound and beat is meticulously put together to make a truly amazing song.

“55” is the best introduction The Knocks could have had. After six-odd years of just releasing singles and EPs, they finally have a solid and well-made record. So, no matter what you’re doing for spring break, The Knocks should definitely be a part of it.
