On Jan. 14, B-cycle, “Denver’s Bikeshare Program,” removed its station from the DU campus due to low activity. Stations at 1901 Buchtel Blvd. (at the DU light rail station), 1280 S. Washington St. (near intersection of West Louisiana Avenue and Pearl Street, at the light rail station); and 650 E. Florida Ave. (near intersection of East Florida Avenue and South Pearl Street) were also removed.

“These four stations do not have the connectivity with other stations in the system needed to make them viable,” stated Denver B-cycle Executive Director Nick Bohnenkamp in a B-cycle press release. “At the same time, these stations will help us increase service in high-demand areas of the city.”

According to the press release, the four stations removed were the least-used among Denver’s 87, and will be better used elsewhere in Denver.

“There were no options for checking a bike into a station near a grocery store, a local restaurant or bar or many of the places that students frequent,” said Chad King, DU’s university sustainability coordinator. “Without system density in an area, bike share is not likely to be widely adopted.”

King said DU is looking into various options to replace the service B-cycle provided on campus.

“We are actively exploring other options for hourly bike shares that we would operate out of the Center for Sustainability to supplement our quarterly bike rentals. We are committed to providing access and encouragement for all campus users to have multiple transportation options in our efforts to reduce single occupancy vehicle trips to and from campus.”

B-cycle will be paying for the removal costs, and DU’s facilities department will be patching up the area where the B-cycle station was located.
