Hello all, my name is Hayden and this is a little blog about all the happenings around the world and at DU that revolve around music. I plan on exploring different genres of music, as well as music news and even student music.

We’re almost halfway through summer break and it seems most of the summer hits have locked in their place as the top summer jams of 2014. As someone who listens to almost every kind of music, I have created a list of six songs that I feel everyone should make room for on their summer playlist. These songs range from top hits to underground jams.

Number 1: Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” – This song is by far one of my favorite songs right now. It’s an amazing gospel ballad that incorporates a simple piano part and a huge choir to create a stunning piece of music. Sam Smith’s voice is also something to rave about. He has a crazy range and can float so easily into it. I’m mesmerized every time I hear him sing. He also just released his first studio album, In the Lonely Hour, which from start to finish is an amazing album.

Number 2: Betty Who’s “Heartbreak Dream” – If you haven’t heard of Betty Who, you need to look her up. She is an amazing Australian singer who only recently graduated from Berklee College of Music. Her music is inspired by the 80’s era with every song having a cool retro vibe. “Heartbreak Dream” is a fun and exciting love song that I feel should be taking the charts by storm. I wish more people knew about her.

Number 3: Lana Del Rey’s “Shades of Cool” – Off of Lana’s recent album, Ultraviolence, “Shades of Cool” has a very relaxing, rock mood. This seems contradictory, but once you listen to the song you’ll understand what I mean. It also has an intenseguitar solo in it that makes this song one of a kind. I’ve honestly never heard anything like it.

Number 4: Cherub’s “Doses and Mimosas” – This song actually was released in late 2013 but I only recently discovered it and it is a perfect party anthem. If you haven’t heard it yet I would definitely recommend you check it out. It’s a dance tune that is perfect for the summer.

Number 5: MØ’s “Glass” – MØ (pronounced moo, I’m not kidding) is an electro pop, Danish singer/songwriter that makes some of the most interesting music out there. Her song “Glass” is very ethereal and is all about not wanting to grow up. It is perfect for a college student’s summer playlist.

Number 6: Kiesza’s “Hideaway” – This song is just a lot of fun. It has a funky bass that makes it the perfect dance hit. Kiesza is also a fully-trained dancer and the music video for this song shows that off. I would definitely recommend watching the video, as it really makes the song.

Well there you have it, my list of six songs that should be on your summer playlist. Most likely you have a list of your own and I would love if you put your list in the comments or even just a song you think I missed. I’m always up for finding new music! Also, at the end of each post in this blog I’ll be putting a Spotify playlist so you can actually listen to the songs I’m talking about. For some reason Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” isn’t on Spotify, so I put another amazing song of his.
