Fresh off a three-day tour of Boulder, Fort Collins and Denver, producer Derek Smith of Pretty Lights dishes up another musical confection.

Released on Oct. 6, the album Passing Behind Your Eyes follows on the heels of Taking Up Your Precious Time and 26-song journey Filling Up The City Skies.

Fronted by versatile producer Derek Smith, who hails from Fort Collins, Colo., and accompanied by drummer Corey Eberhard Pretty Lights is a group with no particular style.

In today’s music world, it seems that the unifying genre of bangin’ beats has music lovers from almost all subcultures and genres gathering together on the dance floor.

What makes Pretty Lights unique from all the other beat groups out there is the fact that they have serious soul and aren’t afraid to show it.

With an appetite for creating high-energy frenzies on dance floors around the country, Pretty Lights gives the public what it wants; electro-organic mash-ups of beats and lyrics that draw from all genres including funk, trance-techno and a splash of hip-hop.

Passing Behind Your Eyes doesn’t disappoint. The first track titled, “World of Illusion,” blazes with an intense opening beat climaxing into a trance-techno rhythm, and then quickly settling into the relaxed groove one has come to expect from the group.

“If I Could Feel Again,” a mix of hard bass lines, soft synthesizer notes, soulful vocal tracks and a distinct piano thread create an atmosphere you can’t help but dance to.

The best part is the music is free. That’s right my friends.

All of the group’s music is available for free on their Web site. With 450,000+ album downloads of their two previous releases, it seems that Pretty Lights is gaining momentum with no signs of slowing down.

Colorado natives Smith and Co. play frequently in Colorado, hitting up obvious hotspots such as The Fox Theater in Denver or The Aggie in Fort Collins as well as smaller more intimate venues such as The Belly Up in Aspen.

Although tour dates have been posted on their Web site, fans will have to wait until after January to catch the group in action.

The wait is worth it though because even if one has never heard the group’s music, the light show is worth the ticket price alone.
